Franklin Police Department has launched an investigation into the death of Christian singer and former “American Idol” contestant Mandisa, who was found deceased in her home near Nashville on Thursday.
Mandisa Lynn Hundley, 47, originally from Citrus Heights, California, was confirmed dead by her representation, The Media Collective, on Friday morning. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
“We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time,” stated The Media Collective.
The Franklin Police, while active at the singer’s home, have not publicly confirmed Hundley’s identity as the deceased. “Our officers responded to a residence for a death investigation Thursday evening, and it’s being actively investigated,” said Max Winitz, spokesperson for the Franklin Police Department, in an email to The Tennessean.
Details surrounding the incident remain scarce.
Mandisa moved to Nashville to attend Fisk University, where she was a member of the esteemed Fisk University Jubilee Singers. She graduated in 2000 with a degree in music. In 2005, she gained national fame on “American Idol,” making it to the top nine.
Her debut album, “True Beauty,” released in 2007, topped the Christian Album charts. Mandisa won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album with “Overcomer” in 2014.
David Pierce from KLOVE, a Christian radio station, shared his condolences: “Mandisa loved Jesus and used her extensive platform to speak about Him. Her kindness was epic, her smile electric, and her voice powerful, yet it was her large heart that truly defined her. Mandisa openly shared her personal struggles, helping many discuss their own. While we mourn, Mandisa is now with the God she so passionately sang about. We are praying for her family and friends and invite you to do the same.”
