All over the world, people enjoy the simple sport of basketball. In order for a team to win, each player has distinct skills which must be accurately performed. If you’d like to figure out what you can do to get better at basketball, keep reading this article.

If you have the ball a lot, learn to execute a crossover. This is when you switch hands while dribbling. You need to perform crossovers very quickly to get good results. Once you master the art of the crossover dribble, you will be able to change directions quicker.

Keep your head up when you dribble. If you must look at the ball while dribbling, you haven’t practiced enough. Bring your ball along when you go out. Dribble on your way to school. Don’t look while dribbling, because you won’t be able to see what’s going on.

You should learn the best way to throw a great bounce pass. It is best when the ball hits the receiving player near the waist. A good estimation is to target the ball to bounce at about 3/4 of the distance that the receiving player is. There are, however, other factors that influence the pass.

Understand your opponent. Watch replays and follow scouting reports. Know which players are left and right handed. When you know more about the opposing team, you will play a better defense. A smart defender is someone who is good at his position.

When injuries occur on the court, it is unwise to keep on playing. Basketball is very challenging physically, and this can cause further serious injury. Trying to tough it out and keep playing, even if you are experiencing discomfort, can exacerbate an injury even more. If you are seriously injured, obtain medical care.

If you aren’t shooting the ball well, you need to concentrate on your shoulders. When your shoulders are not properly positioned, then it is almost impossible to perform at your best. Keep your shoulders square in line with the basket. The dominant shoulder needs to be lined up with the rim.

To hold the ball right, spread your fingers out. This gives you better control of the ball. Also, keep your palm off the ball. Your fingers should be all that is holding the ball when you pass it or shoot it.

Do your free throw shooting the same way every time. Perhaps you will dribble twice, follow up by bending your knees, pulling your earlobe or performing some other ritualistic action for good luck. Just make your routine quick, so that it can be consistent, and your body is going to remember just how to nail free throws following your ritual.

Practice your footwork and control the position of your feet at all times. Placing even a single toe atop the baseline while holding the ball will result in you being ruled out of bounds. You will get called for walking if you take extra steps and are not dribbling. In addition, a foul can be called against you if you move either foot while setting a screen, a pick or taking a charge.

Free Throw

Create and stick to a routine each time you prepare to shoot a free throw. Whatever you do, from bending your knees to dribbling three times, do every time. As you adopt this routine, it becomes easier for your mind and body to prepare for the shot.

A solid routine is necessary for improvement in free throw shooting. If you aren’t consistent, you won’t make the basket. Practice and repetition are the only way to become a consistent free thrower. If your free throw routine is out of whack, you will miss.

Work on passing through your legs to add another skill to your arsenal. Refine this skill by bouncing a ball with force between the legs while stepping backwards or forwards. Mastering this move can give you an advantage on the court.

You must disrupt your opponent’s game when you’re playing defense. Force them to leave their comfort zone. Execute aggressive moves. Keep them from deciding what moves to make. If you allow this, they will run over you. You need to adopt an aggressive style and react quickly so you can interrupt the patterns set by your opponents.

Practice looking in the opposite direction when you make a pass. This should befuddle your opponent. When you do this right, looking this way will make the opponents go to the wrong place so that when you pass the other person has a better chance at making a shot. It’s a powerful play when done right.

A key play on defense is to draw a charge. By taking charge you can create a defensive stop so you can get the ball, and allows you to create setups so that the opponent will foul you. This is play that’s powerful.

Practicing with your weak hand will help to make you a better dribbler. Being ambidextrous on the court makes it more difficult for defenders to figure out what you will do next. You can actually force yourself to utilize your weak hand by tying your other hand behind you. You will improve dribbling with your weak hand soon enough.

Once you are in your defensive stance, remember to hold your ground. You need to learn how to slide your feet instead of crossing one foot in front of the other. Stay low and make it hard for opponents to get around you.

In order to play defense successfully, you must be able to disrupt the game of your opponent. Get them outside their comfort zone. When making a move, be aggressive. Don’t let your opponent decide their own plays. If you let them, you’ll be at their mercy. To avoid this, stay aggressive and try to interrupt their thought patterns and rhythm.

Strength Training

Try to get the basketball from one side of the court to the other in about five dribbles. Although this might seem tricky in the beginning, this can really help your game if you can master this skill. That translates to smooth layups during fast breaks.

In basketball, strength is important, so do strength training. Strength and stamina are both needed to excel at basketball. Even youngsters can strengthen their arms and legs to improve game play. As they grow a bit older, they can add free weights to their strengthening routine. When you get to be an adult is when you want to concentrate on strength training to help improve durability on the court.

Make sure that you can see clearly. This will help you to secure the ball during the game. Your peripheral vision should be at its best. Having good court awareness to see everything around you lets you see plays develop before they happen, either by warding off the defenders or getting the ball to open teammates.

Your defenders need to wait for the point guard to make it 10′ ahead of the time line. They can then trap the point guard. With the forwards blocking outside, you have a good shot at intercepting a bad pass. The point guard throws a pass that can be easily stolen by your forwards.

In order to confuse the offense, try changing your pace. As you approach the goal, plant your foot and then straighten up. This will confuse your opponent into adjusting their stance. When they do this, run ahead and push yourself forward.

For your weaker hand, to build skills, use it off-court for as much as you can, from brushing teeth to opening jars. If you are able to become more dexterous in terms of your weaker hand in general life, you’re going to have better control of it. You will soon see a difference on the court if you are consistent with these simple exercises.

To trap the opposing players in a 2-3 zone, have the defending guards hold back till the opposing point guard has moved beyond the midcourt line by about ten feet. At this point, your guards must rush the point guard thus trapping him. While this is happening, your forwards must sprint toward players in the wings. This will cause the point guard to throw a pass that will allow your forwards to steal.

If you wish to shoot on the outside better you should work on shooting hundreds of times every day from a lot of places on the court. To improve even more, practice preparing for a shot quickly after dribbling the ball. Don’t look at the target until you are in the air. Doing so allows you to move more precisely and with greater accuracy.

If you wish to get your weaker hand built up, you need to use it to brush your teeth and to do other simple tasks. Being more dexterous means you will have better control. So, drill with the weaker hand and use in it in real life.

Work on dribbling the ball while switching the momentum of the body from side to side. During the game, you will dribble in various situations. You need to feel as comfortable with defense closing in on you, as you do in the open court. Learning to dribble effectively will help you in many different situations. This allows you to get yourself out of a tough spot.

If you want to improve your three-point shooting, try and do it from the NBA distance, at a minimum. That is the furthest distance that you would ever have to shoot from to score a three. By learning to shoot from NBA distances, you improve your range tremendously.

If the ball is in your hands, you have to be able to judge whether you should take the shot or make a pass. When you assist, you are still winning the game.

Communication with your team mates is crucial to your overall success. Your actions and strategies must not be kept to yourself. Basketball is considered a team sport. Neither defense nor offense is a one-on-one matter. The whole team has to work together. Speak with them and make them aware of when you require assistance so that all of you play better.

Passing is an important part of basketball. Effective passing can trip up the opposing team. Also, it’s going to establish you as a good teammate, which your fellow players are going to respect and return the favor. Passing is an important part of playing this game. You will be able to show off your individual talents but you must also learn to be a team player.

Positioning is key in picking up an essential rebound. If you wish to have better balance and power, then make sure you use both feet when you jump. After grabbing a rebound, keep your landing wide to improve balance.
